Open a file or folder: |
| |
Dbl-Clk My Computer, Dbl-Clk drive that contains file, Dbl-Clk file or folder you want to open. |

Open a file that you used recently: |
| |
Clk Start (bottom left), Select Documents, and Clk on the document you want to open |

Copy a file or folder: |
| |
On Edit clk Copy, open folder (highlight), on Edit clk Paste |
| |
Send a file to floppy disk: |
| |
Clk on file or folder (in My Comp or Win Exp), on File point to Send To, then clk on drive you want to copy to. |

Move a file: |

Clk on file or folder (in My Comp or Win Exp), on Edit clk Cut, open folder (highlight), on Edit clk Paste |

Create a short cut: |
| |
In folder - Clk on file or folder (in My Comp or Win Exp), on File point to New then clk Shortcut, follow inst.
On Desktop - Clk on file or folder (in My Comp or Win Exp) that you want to make a shortcut of, on File clk Create Shortcut, drag shortcut to Desktop

Create a folder: |

Clk on drive in Win Exp where you want to make a new folder, on File menu point to New, clk on folder, when folder appears type a name for the new folder and press enter

Change the name of a file or folder: |
| |
Clk on file or folder (in My Comp or Win Exp) that you want to change, on File menu clk Rename, type new name and press enter |

Delete a file or folder: |
| |
Clk on file or folder (in My Comp or Win Exp) that you want to delete, on File menu clk Delete |

Searching For Files |

Find a file or folder: |
| |
Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders, in Named, type all or part of the file name, and click Find Now |

See what is on your computer: |
| |
Double-click My Computer.
Double-click the icon of the drive you want to see.
Windows displays the files and folders on the drive. Folders can contain files, programs, and other folders.
To open a file or folder, or to start a program, double-click it. |

Use advanced search methods: |
| |
Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
Click Date to look for files that were created or modified on or between specific dates, or click Advanced to look for files of a specific type or size.
Click Find Now. |
| Protecting Files |

Back up your files: |
| |
You can start Backup by clicking Start, pointing to Programs, pointing to Accessories, pointing to System Tools, and then clicking Backup. |

Passwords can be used to protect files: |
| |
In each word processor or spreadsheet the instructions will be different.
In MS Word to require a password to open:
On the File menu, click Save As.
On the Tools menu in the Save As dialog box, click General Options.
In the Password to open box, type a password, and then click OK.
In the Reenter password to open box, type the password again, and then click OK.
Click Save.
In Excel to require a password to open:
On the File menu, click Save As.
On the Tools menu, click General Options.
In the Password to open box, type a password, and then click OK.
Passwords are case sensitive. Type the password exactly as you want users to enter it, including uppercase and lowercase letters.
In the Reenter password to proceed box, type the password again, and then click OK.
Click Save.
If prompted, click Yes to replace the existing workbook with the open workbook. |
| Downloading Files |

From AOL emails: |
| |
When you see an AOL email in the email list if it has one or more files attached it will have a picture of a diskette behind the envelope. When you open the email, at the bottom there will be two buttons "Download Now", and "Download Later".
If you have AOL 5.0 and download the file now it will be placed in a subfolder called download in the AOL Online 5.0 folder.
To retrieve the file use Open a file or folder instructions above. |

From the World Wide Web: |

When you click on a download button on a web page, first you will be presented with a File Download dialog box with two choices 1) Run this program from its current location; 2) Save this program to disk.
If you select #2 then you will be presented with a Save As dialog box where you can save the program you are downloading in any folder you like. However, you should try to consistently choose the same folder that you use to download other files. Use: AOL Online 5.0/download.
Once you select the folder you want for downloading, Click the Save button in the Save As dialog box to start downloading.
BE SURE TO REMEMBER WHERE YOU DOWNLOADED THE FILE. |

Executing downloaded files from either source: |

Once the file is downloaded with AOL or WWW, find the file with My Comp or Win Exp and dbl clk on it to execute it (it will usually be an installation program) and follow the directions. |
