II. Starting
MS Word
A. Start>Programs>MS
Word
III. The Word Screen
IV. Opening Files
A. File
menu>Open Select Folder in Look In window using the dropdown arrow; select
the proper folder (directory); Highlight a file by selecting it, and click on
open to open the file.
V. Moving around
in your MS Word document
A. With mouse
– click anywhere to place cursor at that point
B. With arrow
keys (↑↓) move one line up or down
C. With arrow
keys (←→) move one character left or right
D. With Home
key move to the beginning of a line
E. With
End key move to the end of a line
F. With
PgUp move one screen up
G. With PgDn
move one screen down
H. With
Ctrl-Home move to the beginning of document
I. With
Ctrl-End move to the end of the document
VI. Typing in Word
A. Type as
normal; when you reach the end of a line, Word will automatically move the
entire word to the next line
B. Deleting
characters – to left of cursor, Backspace; to right of cursor, Delete
C. Deleting
words – If cursor is at start of word, Ctrl-Delete; if cursor is at end of
word, Ctrl-Backspace
VII. Saving Files
A. File
menu>Save As Open Select Folder in Save In window using the dropdown arrow;
select the folder (directory) to place the file in; Put the cursor in the File
name box, and type any file name. Click on the Save button.
VIII.Switching between documents
A. On the menu
bar, the Window menu is used to switch between documents. Just select the
document you want and click on it
IX. Selecting Text
A. To make
changes in text (e.g. size, color, font, or cut/copy) the text must be selected
first.
B. Select a
word by double click
C. Select
sentence by holding Ctrl and click on sentence
D. Select line
with cursor in left margin and click
E. Select
paragraph with cursor in left margin and dbl-click
F. Select
all with cursor in left margin and triple-click
X. Cut, Copy
and Paste
A. Select Text
B. On Menu Bar
open Edit select cut or copy
C. Place
cursor to position in document for cut or copied text
D. On Menu Bar
open Edit select paste
E. Icons
on Tool Bar can be used in place of Edit menu
XI. Formatting
A. You can
change the appearance of your document (e.g. Type size, font and color; bold,
underline, and italics; Bullets and Numbering.
B. The Format
menu or icons on the Formatting toolbar can be used
XII. Formatting (cont.)
A. Word will
allow you to number or bullet items in a list
B. Select the
list and click on the appropriate icon

Setting Tabs
A. Four kinds
of tabs:
1.
Left - text aligns at tab and moves right
2.
Right - text aligns with tab and moves left
3.
Center - text is centered on tab
4.
Decimal - the decimal is aligned with tab
XIV.
Find and Replace
A. On the Edit
menu, Find opens the Find and Replace dialog box.
B. By typing
the text you want to find in the Find what window and clicking the Find next
button, Word will position the document to the first occurrence of the search
text.
C. By
selecting the Replace tab in the Find and Replace dialog box, you will open up
both the Find what and Replace with windows.
D. If the Find
what and Replace with windows contain text, the Find what text is replaced with
the Replace with text in your document when you click the Replace button
XV.Correcting Mistakes
A. Spelling
& Grammar – Words spelled wrong are in red & possible grammatical
errors are in green (underlined). To correct, right-click on the error and
select correct word or grammar.
B. Thesaurus –
MS Word provides assistance in choosing the correct word.
XVI.
Printing
A. To print –
File>Print. This will bring up the print dialog box to allow you to choose
number of copies and pages. Select OK to print. This will print to your default
printer.

Getting Help
A. MS Word
offers extensive on-screen help. Help>MS Word Help or Press F1. Select
Contents tab or the Answer Wizard (Office 2000) and type your question.
